At Brickmakers Wood the Ipswich Men’s Shed, working in conjunction with Greener Ipswich, combines social engagement, education and practical skill-building to support both psychological and physical health. Volunteers play a vital role, offering empathetic one-to-one and peer support within recognised best-practice guidelines. The programme also promotes environmental responsibility, showing how greening urban spaces benefits both people and communities.
Recently, the Men’s Shed group designed and delivered a specialised planter scheme for the Ipswich waterfront as part of their commitment to leading green initiatives. A volunteer secured funding for trial planters through Ipswich Round Table, who will acknowledge their support with discreet signage.
The Waterfront planters were designed, built and installed by Men’s Shed volunteers (recent recipients of the King’s Award for Volunteering) while adhering to strict health and safety standards. Sustainable materials were used throughout, including composted soil and peat-free compost contributed by a member of Greener Ipswich, alongside plants donated by a member of the public.

Waterfront Planting Scheme
The Greener Ipswich CIC aims to strengthen its partnership with the Ipswich Men’s Shed to support long-term planting initiatives and continued environmental improvement.
The Waterfront Planter Scheme was actively supported by the Eden-Rose Coppice Trust. Rob Brooks from the Trust commented “The Trust believes that improving lives requires more than medication alone. We create accessible urban woodlands for people living with life-limiting conditions, including cancer and mental health challenges. These calm, nature-rich spaces help individuals rediscover connection, purpose and wellbeing.”
