There have been lots of positive comments about the new tree planting in Ipswich town centre, which is part of the Greener Ipswich campaign.
We need more trees and too many are being lost. They are the natural lungs and filtration system for the planet.
And trees make us feel good too. At a local level they contribute to better air quality and reduce flooding in times of rain as well as improving our physical and mental wellbeing.
Ipswich has its major parks, of course and a number of pocket park areas around the town too but planting more trees is vital.
Trees absorb carbon and in the British climate can soak up excess rain water. In hotter weather than can reduce the urban heat effect by providing shade and releasing water vapour through leaves.
We automatically seek out their shade for a cool resting place. It is natural cooling than can naturally lower temperatures and reduce the need for powered air conditioning.
It times of heavy rain trees can reduce the threat of flooding by absorbing water and protecting the drainage system.
Removing existing trees from new housing and other development sites is a backward step as it can increase the risk of flooding there. Protecting those trees and planting more is vital.
So plant a tree if you can and look after them near you. Give them a drink in times of drought.
Trees purify our air and also provide important habitats for birds and wildlife. They are good for our environment, community and our own wellbeing.
