To brighten up the grey concrete wall on St Peter’s Dock, Greener Ipswich have now created a beautiful living ‘garden’ comprising 35 wooden planters.
The project has been a calaboration between Greener Ipswich and the Ipswich Men’s Shed based at Brickmakers Wood (close to the University of Suffolk). There has also been support from Suffolk County Council in providing the opportunity to re-purpose some of their old wooden planters and Ipswich Borough Council who funded some of the plants and equipment. ABP, the company who own much of the land along the Waterfront, have also been tremendously supportive allowing parking for maintenance and use of an outdoor tap for watering.
“The planters have been creating quite a buzz, in more than one sense” commented Richard Bloomfield from Greener Ipswich “when we are watering and maintaining the planters we are constantly being told by passers by how beautiful the planters look and what a good job we are doing. The insects seem delighted as well!”

Keeping the planters well watered have been a group of volunteers from the Papworth Trust – an Ipswich based charity supporting disabled people with a range of high quality service. However in the Summer months we need even more help! There are also several trees in the area that need more water in Summer – the importance of this has been highlighted by the charity Trees for Streets – see ‘Watering Wednesday’
